Designed for batch production this chair was planned around creating distinctive seating for easy transport and assembly. By removing the three supporting cross bars the chair can shrink to a third of its assembled size. Allowing for easy transport and storage. Calculating the material deflection for this thermoset plastic, each section was cut flat using a water jet cutter and later assembled to create the finished product.
The design of the digital fabrication installation began with two lines that manipulated the gallery space. The contours were lofted to form a surface that would interact with the space. The final surface was run through a grasshopper script to generate horizontal and vertical ribs. The two sets of ribs were half-lapped together. Each rib was broken down into sections that could be laser cut using an 18x32 bed. Once the ribs were laser cut, they were glued together to create the whole rib. Finally, the ribs were assembled together to allow for an installation to manipulate the built environment. The objective of the installation was to maximize the space that it would occupy with the least amount of material and investigate the scale that could be cut using a 18x32 laser cutter.

Educational chair . Sustainability and product life cycle
Objective :: Bring education about sustainability and product life cycle to children at an early age through an engaging activity.
Execution :: Classroom project involving students creating their own chair from scrap paper, fibers, Wax coated seeds, and a starch based glue. Gaining ownership of the chair through creation gives a feeling of pride and responsibility for the object. Ideally it would be used as any other piece of furniture. When the chair does break the wax coated seeds allows the pieces of the chair to be planted. Retuning the material where it came from as well and replenishing the resources used to make it.

Using Rhino 3D and Grasshopper, a script was written to parametrically divide and ellipsoid surface into a hexagonal pattern. The sections of the 748 wooden hexagons we all cut using a 18x32 laser cutter then wrapped using traditional basket weaving.
How can the hand of the artist be represented within a digital framework?
As with any medium, the means of expression lay dormant until moved into motion by creative intent. As an objective medium, the means of digital production provide new paradigms for such intent. The unification of design process and finished product is a characteristic unique to digital production as the form emerges from the process, rather than a process designed around a final form.
